SMARTEAM - Foundation provides security at three levels: over metadata, data, and remote access.

Database control over metadata - Using robust access permission tools, administrators configure the system to define permission privileges, enabling appropriate users to access the files at the different phases of the product's lifecycle.

Vault control over data - The Vault Server ensures that the integrity of the data is maintained throughout the product lifecycle and against inadvertent deletion and uncontrolled modification, enabling users to check documents and their related components in and out of the electronic vault. By preventing accidental deletion or unauthorized modification, the Vault Server reduces the risk of errors.

Remote access control - The Web Server component facilitates web access to the repository and global product communication through the SMARTEAM web applications.
